The Departed nabs four Academy Awards

26 02 2007

Hollywood’s biggest night was full of surprises and laughs as the 3-hour plus award show drew in an estimated 46 million viewers. The awards themselves were spread out with many films walking away with the gold. The suspense is over and when the dust cleared The Departed was named Best Picture. The film also landed Martin Scorsese his first Academy Award for Best Director and the gritty drama took home Oscars for Best Film Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was a very impressive feat as the movie was only nominated for five Academy Awards in total, only losing in the Best Supporting Actor category.
Little Miss Sunshine won two for Best Original Screenplay and Alan Arkin for Best Supporting Actor upsetting the much favored Dreamgirls. Another upset came in the Best Original Song category as “I Need To Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth beat out all three of Dreamgirls nominated tunes. The Al Gore documentary also took home Best Documentary Feature as the former Vice President received a standing ovation for his efforts to make Global Warming a non-partisan issue. Mexican import, Pan’s Labyrinth won three awards: Best Art Direction, Best Make Up and Best Cinematography, but lost Best Foreign Feature to The Lives of Others.
The year’s two most nominated films, Babel (7) and Dreamgirls (8) left with only a fraction. Babel only managed to score a victory in The Best Original Score race while Dreamgirls won for Sound Mixing and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson). In another less high profile upset, Happy Feet marched all over Pixar’s Cars to win Best Animated Feature.

did anyone else see how disappointed Eddie Murphy was when he lost. it was kind of sad because he and wife like stormed out. stop making films like Norbit and you might gain a little respect.
